“The Adventures of Bateena” is a series of multiage math problems designed to teach children how to discover and develop their potential for problem solving and critical thinking. Through the use of multimedia (graphics, audio, animations), “Bateena” (a friendly female bat mascot) presents children with highly interactive and collaborative real world situations and guides them towards analyzing and solving the problems using mathematical thinking.
To make learning fun and interesting, the program has been organized into colored caverns, each representing certain strands of the math curriculum. For example, the Turquoise Cave is designed to incorporate the general outcomes of Transformations – Motion Geometry in a science environment. As children are guided through a series of problems, they have several opportunities to participate and learn how to strategize and respond successfully. The program has on-board help buttons, an interactive glossary, and an ever-present mascot that guides the children at all times.
Each set of problems is designed to benefit ages seven through eleven children including home schooled, children attending school, or children/parents seeking a more digital method of delivery. The content of each cavern is unique and innovative and has been created by a master educator. The mascot is articulate and can be understood by international children who practice English as a Second Language.
“The Adventures of Bateena” is a powerful educational program that supports children in connecting concepts by activating and building their logical reasoning skills through and drawing relevant conclusions by using existing knowledge in new situations. Intriguing and thought provoking situations stimulate children to use higher order thinking skills (analyzing, creating, evaluating).
This resource can be used for both math enrichment or as a remedial support program for children struggling with problem solving strategies. There is also a tracking system for an administrator/parent that identifies the problem the child is presently working on in the program. When students complete the set of problems in each cavern (module), they are awarded a certificate of completion they can proudly print and post.
